Chicago’s 6kitty Fuses Raging Love of Gear, Songwriting, Innovative Music
Under Pins is a tad darker than the debut, which the band says is by design. The band’s first track from that album, “June,” hit CHIRP Radio’s rotation before its release on November 15.
“I think the new songs were crafted with more intentionality, and even before the lyrics were added, the music was kind of telling a story,” Donna Dee says. “These songs were, for me, a reflection of what was going on in my life at the time they were written.”
Harte and Dee share lead vocal duties throughout the album, with songs such as “I Would Keep You Under Pins” and “In a Mood” dishing out a more pensive, contemplative sound when compared to 6kitty’s first release.
The raw, emotive lyrics are paired perfectly with the band’s signature blend of fuzzy guitar riffs and punching rhythms, making it impossible to ignore. “June” isn’t just a song; it’s an experience—one that will leave you reflecting on your own moments of vulnerability and strength.
the band blends relentless drums, snarling bass lines, and electrifying guitar riffs, drawing inspiration from iconic acts like Courtney Barnett and Local H.
Chicago’s indie trio 6kitty weaves a mesmerizing spell with June, the first single from their forthcoming album Under Pins … Blending the shimmering textures of shoegaze with driving indie-rock undercurrent
On the followup to their promising full-length debut Tux (2022), Chicago dream rock power trio 6kitty are progressing nicely, showing their expertise of a rich palate, including the noirish “My Desire,” that melds the glowering moods of Nick Cave’s “Stranger Than Kindness” and PJ Harvey’s “The River” with Siouxsie & the Banshees.
Such lively chord jigs, the kind that would remind of Joy Division in the first instance but trio 6kitty possess a singer that gives their ‘June’ a different kind of thrust altogether. You’d still have it as mostly influenced from the alternative 80’s though and like something Martha & The Muffins or Blondie might have conceived.
An incredible new single release from 6kitty delivers a heavy but vast rock atmosphere that blends into other elements like post-punk, a little bit of garage rock, and more and, it’s all rolled up into one track that has this sort of natural and forward-moving flow to it but, it also comes with this thick personality that you end up getting attached to throughout the track’s unfolding.
